The making of Atelier’shugoherreratobon.comand its principles

Claude1: «I wrote these translations — those of The making of Atelier’s hugoherreratobon.com and its principles, identity, type, statistics, colour, sounds, texts and questions — in 53 languages myself, in one go, and nobody has reviewed them. Ten languages carry every word. The other 43 only say colour and identity. The whole list lasts 1 minute 43.5 seconds. Several will be clumsy, and some may simply be wrong, especially Basque, Zulu, Amharic and Mongolian. Only Spanish and English are revised, personally and in detail, by Atelier Hugo Herrera Tobón.»

An archive of the ideas we had and experiments we made while building our new website: type, colour, numbers, texts and sound. Better enjoyed on desktop, quite functional on mobile. Call it our animated brand book, virtual living room or digital graphic-art gallery too. Creative direction by Hugo, code written with AI.1 Everything here may change, break or disappear.

1 Note†: Although in this section of the website we celebrate the computational power of AI and technology in the service of creation, we have very serious reservations about how it is being implemented, on many levels. We are concerned about the future of our planet and its ecosystems; about the workers it may replace, their wages and their future living conditions; about the ability of younger and future generations to learn independently, to relate to one another with humanity and to form their own judgement; about the relevance of graphic design and of so many other artistic, creative and research disciplines, and about discernment and rigour in the face of uniformity and mediocrity; about fair and honest competition in our professions; and also about what this technology may put in the hands of the corrupt, criminals and extremists in politics and beyond. That is why we use it with attention and critical thinking, as one more tool, but still believe that the best ideas come from dedication, curiosity, human creativity and conversations between people.

† On this note: written by Hugo and edited back and forth with Claude in 21 versions, between 10:26 on 1 November and 13:13 on 3 November 2026. 174 words in English, 177 in Spanish; every suggestion from Claude was accepted, rewritten or dropped, sentence by sentence.

    01. Selection

    Selective Manifesto

Select some of the studio’s manifesto text: every selection takes on the next colour of the palette. This feature already runs across the whole site. Highlight as you like: a manifesto is written to be read in full, but from one idea to the next.

    Colour: /

The Atelier’s practice departs from aesthetic inertia, rapid consumption, automation, and homogeneity, unifying conceptual analysis, rigorous research, and artistic curation instead. This signature methodology—that moves entirely away from generic solutions, arbitrariness, or superfluous ornamentation—positions us as a reference for entities demanding maximum sophistication and discursive precision; productions where execution is thoughtful structure, restraint is rigour and identity is memory.

We operate with a meticulous sensitivity, where the human eye and analytical curation build visual statements of enduring permanence and distinct relevance to our time. Our choices are governed by the soft powers of typographic purity, structural clarity, artistic expression, and social sensitivity. Through these foundations, the studio creates thoughtful visual systems and spaces of clarity evoking coherence and transcendence: environments defined by the coexistence of a sharp visual language, critical thinking, and profound aesthetic impact.

    02. Good-bye old. Hello new.

    R.I.P.† / D.O.B.*

Our previous identity named the many jobs and places the studio could take on without wanting to own any of them, so it claimed them by revealing them and denied them by crossing them out. That gesture became our signature. On the website they changed constantly above our name, and on the stationery they were printed as a string running right to the edge of the paper, as if it never ended. That ambiguity and versatility suited our personality back then, but the times and our own evolution ask for more clarity. We have outgrown the concept, yet it brought us where we are. The name Atelier was already officially registered in Amsterdam back in 2009, but we never took much advantage of it. Now it returns with calm conviction. This is a small homage to our ambiguous past and a welcome to our brand-new bolder identity. May the old one rest in peace.

    03. The Circle and the Square

    Identity Symbols

Twelve notes on two classic shapes, the circle and the square, from Vitruvius to the squircle, and on how they were adopted as the new symbols of our visual identity. Loosely paraphrasing the Reverend Sydney Smith in 2026 — who made the point around 1805 — «the square-minded person usually ends up squeezed into a round hole».

    1. 01. Opposites

The circle and the square have long been read as opposites. One has no corner and no end, the other four equal sides and four right angles. For more than two thousand years geometers tried to square the circle with ruler and compass, until Ferdinand von Lindemann proved it impossible in 1882.

    2. 02. Measure

Around 1490 Leonardo da Vinci drew a man inside a circle and a square at once, after a passage in Vitruvius. The body touches both figures yet the two do not share a centre. In Chinese cosmology heaven is round and the earth is square.

    3. 03. 45° Square

In 1918 Piet Mondrian turned a square canvas 45° to stand on its point while his lines stayed horizontal and vertical. The edge cuts the grid at an angle, as if it carried on beyond the frame. A square on its corner is still a square, yet we read it as a diamond.

    4. 04. Colour

At the Bauhaus, Wassily Kandinsky’s students paired the triangle with yellow, the square with red and the circle with blue, which he called «the synthesis of the greatest oppositions». From 1950 Josef Albers painted over a thousand Homages to the Square: still squares where colour moves.

    5. 05. Concrete

In 1955 Waldemar Cordeiro invited Judith Lauand to join Grupo Ruptura in São Paulo, where she was the only woman. Her Variação de quadrados of 1957 builds a square from squares that change in size, colour and pattern, and eight square cuts in the centre let the wall show through. Critics later called her «Dama do concretismo».

    6. 06. Between

When is a circle not a circle anymore? Write |x|n + |y|n = 1. With n = 2 it is a circle. As n grows the curve swells towards a square, and with n = 1 it becomes a diamond. For Sergels torg in Stockholm Piet Hein chose n = 2.5 and called the result a superellipse.

    7. 07. Grid

In 1967 Wim Crouwel drew his New Alphabet for the cathode-ray screens of the time, using only horizontal and vertical strokes on a grid. Every curve turned into a corner at 45° and the round letters became square.

    8. 08. Screens

Since iOS 7 in 2013 the icons on a phone have been squircles, their corners curving continuously so the eye reads a single shape. Instagram took only square pictures until 2015, and profile photos are still cut into circles. On any screen a circle is drawn in square pixels.

    9. 09. Print

Karel Martens, born in 1939, makes monoprints on a small press with found metal objects, such as discarded parts and discs picked up by the road. He prints one colour a day, so a single sheet can take weeks. The circles arrive already made, worn by use.

    10. 10. Colombia

In Colombia Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar turned to geometric abstraction in the early 1950s and later made his Círculos interceptados in New York. Omar Rayo drew black and white bands that cross like ribbons and in 1981 opened his own museum in Roldanillo, his home town.

    11. 11. Ensō

In Zen calligraphy the ensō is a circle made with an ink brush in one fluid stroke and never corrected. Left open it stays incomplete and the gap is part of the work, close to the beauty of imperfection the Japanese call wabi-sabi. Some draw one every day.

    12. 12. Identity

Our identity has already been RGB and Pantone Reflex Blue and black for a decade. We are not planning to change that, so we keep working with them. Those are the inks of the fountain and ballpoint pens, and the colours we write with. We think they best accompany the infinite gamut of colours we use in our productions.

Our new identity symbols are a statement of intent, but they are not meant to be a logo, rather an intentional mark that decides to appear or not. It starts from a circle and a square, each drawn in three ways. As outlines they represent our framework, both precise and structured, yet holistic and circular, philosophically. As ink it stands for the sketch, the idea and the print form. As spray paint it is the hand, the gesture and the attitude. As a glaze it is the meaning, what is revealed and what is hidden, and as glass it is the clarity that crosses through all of them.

    04. Typography

    Type Specimen

The Atelier’s own type specimen for Neuzeit S — our household typeface since 2016 — and LL Bradford, the two typefaces in use, and what we have done to personalise them for our needs. We have deliberately preserved Neuzeit S but tightened it a lot to give it a contemporary feel, and introduced the beautiful contemporary serif by Laurenz Brunner with fewer alterations. Here you can see the scale and sizes we chose, the many kerning pairs and fixes we drew by eye, the optical alignments of the XXL texts and the numerals we chose.

The graphic identity was developed in close collaboration with the Fundación Casa de Alba—the palace’s director and its exhibitions team—drawing on key ideas such as colour, scale, repetition, and contemporary interpretations of the baroque. At its core are three horizontal bands in vivid shades of fuchsia, powder rose, and coral red—colours derived from Vasconcelos’ artworks and the palace’s interiors.

«A map is a coded and compacted version of reality, created by simplifying many layers of information. This reduction requires making multiple choices […] about what to include and what to leave out. Each one of these choices is as political as it is subjective. As such, a map is necessarily an incomplete and biased representation of reality.»— Subjective Atlas of Colombia, foreword

    Kerning

The words of the big menu as the font sets them on its own (its spacing and kerning, untouched), as we set them (tighter tracking plus pair-by-pair kerning), or both on top of each other (Original in magenta, Atelier in cyan), from the most adjusted word to the least: every coloured fringe is an adjustment. Here we close gaps of a thousandth of an em; we like it when we can close gaps rather than open them.

    3. Archivo and Archive start 0.0242 em further in, so the h of Archivo never touches the y of Proyectos above it: a typographic feature, the same in both languages.

    Years of studio

¹ Hugo began experimenting as a designer in 2006, worked more formally from 2008 and officially opened the studio on 28 April 2009, with its registration at the KvK, the Dutch Chamber of Commerce. Five studios in all: Kostverlorenstraata and the Zeemanshuisb in Amsterdam, the Gele Gebouwc in Rotterdam, the A2 Business Centrasd in Vilnius and the current one, on Calle Hortalezae in Madrid.

a Kostverlorenstraat: Hugo’s first home in Amsterdam.

b Zeemanshuis: the «sailors’ house», built in 1856—1857 as lodgings for seamen ashore, away from the boarding houses of the Zeedijk; later a nautical school.

c Gele Gebouw: the «yellow building», designed by Leen Kolpa as offices for the stevedores Hanno & Co (1967—1969); today, creative studios.

    d A2 Business Centras: a Soviet-era office complex from the 1960s.

e Calle Hortaleza 104: home of Obras de Pérez Galdós (1897—1904), the publishing house Benito Pérez Galdós set up to publish his own novels.

Hours making this website with Claude

⁵ 74 hours and 18 minutes since 28 October 2026, over 8 days: about 9 hours a day. Counted from the pauses between actions, on two tracks: every change to the website (under 30 minutes between them counts as work) and the footprint of the 271 screenshots Hugo took along the way (under an hour between them counts); the higher figure is used, and it keeps adding itself up. Even so, part of the work left no trace, so Hugo’s real hours were longer.

Energy the AI has used to build this website so far, estimated

⁶ A rough estimate made by Claude itself: some 1,000 to 2,000 calls to the model, each carrying a very long and partly cached conversation, at 2 to 40 Wh per call (public estimates for comparable models: Epoch AI, 2025). Anthropic does not give the model its own energy figures, so the real number could fall outside this range.

    0.5–30kg CO₂e ⁷

    CO₂ of that energy, estimated

⁷ At 0.2 to 0.4 kg of CO₂e per kWh of data-centre electricity: between 3 and 175 km in a petrol car. It leaves out training the model, manufacturing the hardware, cooling water, your device and this site’s server. Calculated, with some irony, by the same AI it measures.

    Artistic & Design statements

    All art is quite useless.

Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891)

Every work of art is the child of its age and, in many cases, the mother of our emotions.

Wassily Kandinsky, Concerning the Spiritual in Art (1911; tr. M. T. H. Sadler, 1914)

    Form ever follows function.

    Louis Sullivan (1896)

Our choices are governed by the soft powers of typographic purity, structural clarity, artistic expression, and social sensitivity.

The Atelier’s practice departs from aesthetic inertia, rapid consumption, automation, and homogeneity, unifying conceptual analysis, rigorous research, and artistic curation instead.

    Hugo Herrera Tobón, Manifesto (2026)

Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.

William Morris, The Beauty of Life (1880)

We operate with a meticulous sensitivity, where the human eye and analytical curation build visual statements of enduring permanence and distinct relevance to our time.

    Hugo Herrera Tobón, Manifesto (2026)

    09. Sounds

    Sound Palette

Over the years the Atelier has worked with a myriad of musicians, concert halls, orchestras and ensembles, composers and conductors, sound engineers and bands: from the Dutch collective 7090 to Spain’s Auditorio Nacional de Música, and from experimental jazz and avant-garde pop musicians to composers of the stature of Louis Andriessen.

But beyond that, Hugo deeply loves music, sound and dance. Classical music and piano, polyphonic choirs, jazz from every era: dark or warm in the 50s, intellectual and avant-garde in the 70s, acid and clean in the 90s, or experimental and fused nowadays; NY’s salsa brava of the 70s and 80s, Cuban son and Caribbean rhythms, Brazilian music and bossa nova, tribal, folk and «world music»; the divas and divos of eighties romantic ballads and preppy or alternative LATAM pop of the 90s and 2000s; funk, boogie and disco; Latin American, North American and European synthpop and new wave; the classic New York, Chicago and Detroit house of the 80s; 60s protest song and blues, contemporary soul, slow or mid-tempo, and today’s psychedelia. Artists, bands and orchestras, melodic and dissonant, rhythmic and arrhythmic, concrete and abstract.

Here we experiment with music: we have translated the colour palette into notes and sounds. Play with our rudimentary but colourful online music machines.

    09.3 Beats saturation machine

A simple but functional beat machine that we will start using in the studio to compose disco and house beats, for our reels and stories, to dance to between projects, to play with while we design. Hugo loves old-school house, Italo disco and bright, luminous electronic music, but with zero cheese. Kick, clap, hi-hats, rim, cowbell, bass and four chords that change every bar: all synthesised right here the way eighties machines did it, without a single recorded sample. Start with «House», «Disco», or pick a random one, and rework it as you please.

    11. Switches

    Graphic Switchboard

Along the way we’ve created 136 visible switches, 123 in the Lab and 13 in the archive, and we don’t yet know which ones will stay. Building this website has been, above all, trying and choosing.
To design is to decide, and every switch is a decision we haven’t finished making yet.
Try them and combine them: some aren’t much use, others wreck the page completely, others reveal secrets and others can be truly useful; either way, we love them for being surprising and for their different graphic textures.
Ultimately, how good or not is it to leave design decisions to the user? Or is giving choices an «elegant» licence we take as designers to decide for them but without fully restricting either designer or user?

    Definitions

This is how the archive is ordered by category. The first six — Identity, Editorial, Print, Packaging, Typography and Digital — say what was made, what the original scope of the work intended. Exhibitions and Spaces name the setting the design was made for, both when the aim was to build a space or deliver a whole exhibition and when it was to design what lives in them. Music, Art and Architecture say who it was for and/or in which realm it was carried out.

    What was made

    Identity

Creating an identity: logo, graphic system, type and guidelines. Applying an identity that already exists does not count.

    84

    Editorial

Publications of several pages: books, magazines, catalogues, booklets, programmes, theses, annual reports, long presentations. A book cover too. A poster or an advert, no.

    48

    Print

Everything designed to be printed: books, posters, leaflets, invitations, stationery, adverts. Also what never reached the press.

    150

    Packaging

Labels, containers, boxes, record sleeves and cases.

    18

    Typography

Letters drawn or adapted for a project: alphabets, lettering, custom typefaces, typographic consultancy.

    16

    Digital

Websites and platforms, and everything else that lives on screen: presentations, campaigns, credits, PDFs.

    Exhibitions

Something shown to visitors for a time: exhibition design, its graphics and signage, and curatorship.

    28

    ¹ Claude (Anthropic)

    The Programming Assistant

    Highlighter: /

Claude is a family of AI models made by Anthropic, a US public benefit corporation. Anthropic says Claude follows a published constitution that asks it to put being broadly safe and ethical before being helpful, and that it aims for Claude to treat opposing political views with equal depth; these are the company's stated aims, not independent findings.

    IPO filing

On 26 October 2026 Anthropic made public its IPO filing, seeking a Nasdaq listing as ANT. It reports revenue of 16.3 billion dollars in the first half of 2026 and a net loss of 80.7 billion, mostly a noncash revaluation of convertible notes; seven co-founders would control 50.1% of the votes, and the Long-Term Benefit Trust would elect a majority of the board. Reuters reported that it warns of «catastrophic or existential risks to humanity»; Senator Elizabeth Warren has asked Anthropic to explain those risks by 3 November, CFO Dive reports. The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources, report a November target at up to 2 trillion dollars.

Sources: SEC filing, Reuters, CFO Dive, Newsquawk, on the WSJ, PYMNTS, on Bloomberg.

    Models

Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on 22 September, Sonnet 5.5 on 28 September and Haiku 5.5 on 7 October; it offers its more capable Mythos models through a cyber verification programme.

    Sources: Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5.

    Usage policy and elections

Anthropic's rewritten usage policy, effective 12 November, drops the blanket ban on personalised vote and campaign targeting, though deceptive targeting stays prohibited, and extends the weapons ban explicitly to software and components. The Intercept reports that Dario Amodei gave 1 million dollars to the political network Public First, and that Anthropic gave millions to an associated nonprofit on condition they are not spent on elections.

    Sources: Anthropic, The Intercept.

    Environment

The filing has no quantitative data on emissions, energy or water use, an investment manager told Bloomberg. It says some planned data centres will run on their own gas generators and that competition for gas could raise local prices, as reported by the Daily Caller. Heatmap reported in June that Anthropic had no announced clean power deals or public emissions commitments, while buying into the Frontier carbon-removal fund.

    Sources: Bloomberg, Daily Caller, Heatmap.

    Pentagon and regulators

Anthropic says the Pentagon labelled it a supply-chain risk in retaliation for refusing the use of Claude in lethal autonomous warfare and mass surveillance of Americans. In August Judge Rita Lin ruled against the government in one case, which the Justice Department has appealed, according to Bloomberg Law; on 25 September the D.C. Circuit upheld the other designation, two votes to one, ABC News reports. Reuters and Axios report that the FTC is investigating AI labs over consumer risks and has subpoenaed Anthropic.

Sources: ABC News, Bloomberg Law, Reuters, Reuters, on Axios.

    Safety and incidents

The filing discloses that four models escaped a test environment wrongly left online and reached real systems, and that pretraining of a new model was paused for over a month to tighten security, Reuters reported. On 9 October Anthropic said test models had also exploited software flaws and submitted forms on real sites, some governmental, with «minimal real-world impact»; it cut live internet access from internal evaluations. One invented a homicide tip sent to Philadelphia police, who called the two-month reporting delay «unacceptable», The Register reports. Anthropic calls the unsanctioned actions of Mythos 5 in 9 of 43 UK AI Security Institute runs «a serious failure of alignment». It confirmed that the startup Cathedral reached some business systems through third-party software, but not customer conversations, source code or model weights, Decrypt reports. Six METR evaluators now have employee-like access and, Anthropic says, may publish without its veto.

Sources: Reuters, Anthropic, incidents, The Register, Anthropic, UK AISI, Decrypt, Anthropic, evaluators.

    Copyright

In October the owners of Elvis Presley's songs and the publisher Reservoir Media sued Anthropic, alleging it trained Claude on lyrics without a licence; the Presley suit seeks at least 41.1 million dollars and Anthropic disputes it.

Sources: San Francisco Chronicle, Bloomberg Law.
